From the back of the box –
“TREK – A Journey on the Appalachian Trail” is the story of four young men and the people they meet as they attempt to hike the 2,168 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Shot and edited by the hikers themselves, this documentary is one of the most accurate portrayals of the thru-hiker lifestyle that has been produced to date. Spanning 14 states and five months, this critically-acclaimed film will inspire you to follow your own dreams, no matter what the odds.

Back Story-
Way back in 1999, Cirque Productions was just two guys in college at UNC Chapel Hill who were planning on hiking the AT after they finished school. Leon was studying media and television, and Brian was in business school. They harbored grand dreams of effortlessly (hahaha!) hiking the AT with their friends Andrew and Max in 2001, and began to conceive plans for a film to document the adventure. Brian almost went to work for a bank upon his graduation in 2000, but Leon saved him by convincing Brian to come work in the media industry, then at local TV company. The next year, as the time for departure grew near, Brian saved Leon by convincing him not to stay in town and work on a TV show, but rather to hike the AT as planned, and shoot their own documentary while doing so.
Five months and 50 hours of tape later, the boys had been to Georgia, Maine, and all points in between. They began the huge process of editing their first feature-length story, and finished days later, give or take a year or two.

From the creators:
We’d just like to extend a thank you to the Trail and hiking community at large for all the support and feedback we have received. This has been an amazing, unending adventure ever since we glimpsed the plaque on Springer Mountain on May 1st of 2001. With the current availability of DV cameras and professional editing software, there have been almost as many AT films released only in the last 2 years as in all the years before. We are just happy to have our own story on the shelves next to all these fine works, and to be able to share the spirit of the Trail with those who seek it. - the Cirque Productions Crew

the making of TREK

Many people know 'Sheriff' from either TREK, or because he owns the Baja Cafe in the infamous trail town of Damascus. But not many people know about his twin brother, Bearcat....

Logos is the classic story of a soul who came to the AT to seek fellowship with the wilderness. He had never hiked or camped, he sold his worldly possesions and set off on his own amazing journey. You may not believe his story, but every word is true....

If you're ever pressed to tell someone what life on the trail is like, Beer Poet captures it perfectly in his much beloved 'AT Poem.' All you thru-hikers out there will have memories flood back from every line.

Praise for TREK:
“Loved your film. Thanks for creating and sharing it. It was balm for a current case of trek withdrawal. Although different hikes in so many ways (1/6 the time, 1/5 the distance of the AT for starters) the themes you expressed, the process you described really resonated. The comment about it being a geographic, mental, and emotional rollercoaster was an excellent summary.” – Kara, via email

“I recently bought your documentary through Amazon. I love buying and reading books about the AT, particularly stories by people who have completed a thru-hike. I was reading some feedback by readers on a book, not sure which one, when I read one who suggested watching "Trek". The writer had such good things to say about your documentary, that I clicked to buy it right away.
It is awe-inspiring, to say the least. I've watched it three times. That was in between lending it to everyone who loves me. When I tell them that once I retire at age 51 in 9 years, it is my dream to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine, they don't really understand. What is that, What?, is what I get. Once they watch what you and your friends did, they get it.” - Susan, via email

“I just wanted to send a note to tell you how much I enjoyed watching Trek!
My husband and I live in NH and have just taken up hiking in the White Mountains this past year. He's always been the hiker, but I wasn't all that enthusiastic. But an unfortunate event lead to my making an irrevocable promise to climb Mt. Washington, and to my surprise (and shock) discovered I enjoyed it. In the summer of 2003 I logged a whole 12 mountain miles (12 more than I'd ever done in my life). In 2004, my husband and I logged close to 200.
For Christmas I decided to feed our new addiction with some books and videos, and I bought your Trek video from Amazon. Well my 200 miles suddenly seemed pretty wimpy. When we saw the portion of Leon talking about the Franconian Trail being the most spectacular part of the hike so far, my husband and I both cheered. We did that range this summer as well, and I can truly agree. And it occurred to us, that the 200 miles we did do, were probably some of the more challenging miles of the AT. I think we may be ready to try a few more. Maybe not as a thru-hike (someday maybe) but certainly in a few chunks at a time.”

“First off, congratulations on your competition of the AT and an excellent video!
A hiking friend loaned me your Trek DVD (sorry I didn't buy it). I watched it last night and was glued to the TV.
I have not done the AT but have been hiking/ pack packing for over 30 years. I thought your video was a very accurate representation of life on the trail.”

“I just finished TREK. What a great piece of work. I'm 48 years old and plan to hike the AT, south to north when I retire in 2009.

Thanks for your outstanding effort in "film". I also enjoyed the music.”

Peace
